In Kiev, they plan to create a naval base of the Ukrainian Navy in the Sea of Azov by the end of this year, for which the transfer of small armored boats from Nikolaev has already begun.
“Based on the results of the meeting of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine on September 6, a decision was taken to strengthen the naval presence in the Sea of Azov, the creation of a naval infantry grouping of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the development of an appropriate infrastructure, and others, “the Ukrainian Military Portal reports.
On the eve of a closed meeting of the Ukrainian Security Council, at which Peter Poroshenko approved a set of measures to strengthen the military presence in the Sea of Azov.
This idea did not arise today: in 2014 there were talks about the establishment of the Ukrainian Navy base in the Azov Sea, but then Kiev was not up to the sea and everything remained at the stage of conversations.
In the future, it is planned to deploy a cavalry division of the half of the currently available six small armored artillery boats in the Ukrainian Navy – Ackerman, Berdyansk, Vyshgorod, Kremenchug, Lubny and Nikopol “.
Today, the coast of the Sea of Azov in Donetsk, Zaporozhye and Kherson Regions is controlled by the 23rd detachment of maritime security of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, in which only the guard ship of Project 205P BG-32 Donbas can be considered a combat unit.
This unit sustained significant losses in 2014: a small boat of maritime protection BG119 was destroyed by direct hit ATGM militia of the DNR, and the second boat of the BG-22 was blown up on its own mine, which in 2014 was strewn all over the seabed. So the additional three boats are a substantial increase in the fighting efficiency of the detachment.
“Militarization of the Sea of Azov, which repeatedly increases the probability of an armed clash between the parties, is, perhaps, at this moment the worst that Kiev could come up with. Russia will prevent this by all means available to it, acting at the same time strictly within the framework of international law, “member of the Federation Council Defense Committee Franz Klintsevich commented on the news.
According to a number of Ukrainian experts, by strengthening the grouping of boats in the Sea of Azov and simultaneously inflating the theme of “Russian aggression”, Kiev is thus acting in the mainstream of the US intentions to organize for Ukraine shipments of weapons and weapons for the Navy, as US Special Representative Kurt Volker recently said in an interview with the British The Guardian. In order to resolve the issue of such supplies, Poroshenko faces the task of increasing the degree of tension in the Sea of Azov.
