Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Anatoly Hrytsenko explained why the officers dismiss armed forces. According to him, the blame for this is the bad condition of the material and technical support of the the Ukrainian military.
“They call me and tell that they have salary, there are combat vehicles, but we dont have spare parts – we must repair it at our own expense. We must buy shovels and oiling greasing for our own expense”, Hrytsenko said.
Absence of a qualified command staff in the Ukrainian army is also the reason for the massive dismissal of officers. According to Gritsenko, the whole unit, which passed the NATO attestation and participated in the Operation of the Joint Forces in the Donbass region, wrote reports on the dismissal because of the “idiocy” of the command and there was no one to assign a task correctly.
The former minister considers that another problem for the Ukrainian army is corruption. As an example, he cited the selection in Kalinovka (Vinnitsa district) for a peacekeeping mission in the Congo, which was reported by the officers.
“The officers wrote that in Kalinovka (Vinnytsia district) the selection for the peacekeeping mission in the Congo was cited. Those who received bad mark or satisfactory mark in physical training and shooting, but paid a bribe, they will go, but there are no normal officers.”
Meanwhile, on the air of Radio Komsomolskaya Pravda, the former minister denied his own words.
“Sorry, I did not say such stupid things and do not comment. All the best”, he said.
Stepan Poltorak, Ministry of Defense, announced the staffing problems of the Ukrainian army. He wrote in a letter to Prime Minister Vladimir Groisman, that over 11 thousand officers and contract servicemen who had military experience left the Armed Forces in the first half of the year, and about 18,000 servicemen were going to do the same by the end of the year. The main reason for dismissal is low wages.
Earlier, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine recognized that since April 2014, 43,000 servicemen became involved in criminal cases. In addition, the army bears significant nonbattle casualties, including suiucides. According to the Chief Military Prosecutor Anatoly Matios, since the beginning of the military operation in the Donbass region, nearly four thousand servicemen have committed suicide.
