An Italian military contingent entered the Syrian province of Deir ez Zor.
According to the Turkish “Anadolu” agency, a week ago Italian military units entered Syria from the territory of Iraq. First they were deployed in the province of Hasaka on one of the American bases, and then transferred to the province of Deir ez Zor. The agency describes the Italian contingent as a small number.
Currently, the Italian military is on a small American base near the Al-Omar oil field in the province of Deir ez Zor. The participation of Italians in the hostilities is not planned.
This territory is under the control of the Syrian democratic forces, which the US supports. The SDF is based on the Kurdish armed units of the YPG and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party. Turkey classifies Kurdish groups as terrorist organizations.
Italian official sources and the press service of the coalition led by the United States have not yet commented on the fact that the Italian military is stationed in the territory of the SAR.
It should be noted that Al Omar is the largest oil field in the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic.
It can be assumed that the Italians will guard Al-Omar to prevent its passage under the control of the Syrian government. Apparently, the United States needs more support from its allies to legitimize its military presence in Syria.
In addition, the US deal with Turkey and the subsequent withdrawal of Kurdish armed forces from Mundbija made a split in the Kurdish movement. Part of the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Council is going to negotiate with the official Damascus without any preconditions.
