The confrontation between the two NATO allies, Turkey and the United States, continues.
Recall, the crisis arose because of the support provided by the United States to the self-defense forces of the Syrian Kurds, whom Ankara considers as a terror-ist group associated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party banned in Turkey. In addi-tion, Ankara requires Washington to extradite an opposition preacher Fethullah Gulen, who is accused of organizing a coup attempt in July 2016.
Back in March, the US military command significantly reduced the number of combat operations carried out from the Incirlik Air Force Base in Turkey. And recently it became known that Turkey exported its gold reserves from the US.
And all this is happening against the backdrop of the final disagreement over the arms purchases of Ankara. On May 23, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that Washington is working to prevent Turkey from buying from the Russian Federation S-400 surface-to-air missile systems. At the same time, the Secretary of State very transparently hinted that under certain conditions Washington will not sell F-35 aircraft to Turkey.
With the usual aplomb, the Turks responded vividly and said that they would find where to buy other aircraft. And all observers in one voice began to talk about Russian Su-57. Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu confirmed that if the United States does not deliver the promised fifth-generation fighter-bombers, then Russian aircraft will be considered as an alternative.
“There is no reason why the United States will not give us the F-35. We do not want to spoil relations with our US ally. But in case of problems Turkey will not remain without an alternative. Can buy from both Russia and any other NATO country, “Cavusoglu said.
But in fact – a bargain. Samuel Bendett, an American military expert, analyst for the Center for Naval Analyzes (Center for Naval Analyzes), believes that these aircraft are in the same ” class” – they have similar characteristics in the design and requirements for flights. And moreover Su is half the price of their F …
But the Turks would not have been Turks, if they decided to stop at this. They went on. And the same Foreign Minister Cavusoglu said that Ankara can close the Incirlik air base for Americans. By the way, not for the first time.
The Minister stressed that Ankara expects that the United States “stands back from its wrong steps.” “We have other trump cards in our hands,” the minister said. Apparently, hinting at the planes and S-400.
We are waiting for the next rounds.
