Damascus strongly condemns the Turkish aggression in the city of Afrin, which is an integral part of the territory of Syria, and calls on the international community to stop Ankara immediately, the statement of the Syrian foreign ministry said.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry denied the statements of Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu that Ankara allegedly informs Damascus about the progress of the operation in Afrin, TASS reports with reference to SANA.
“This aggression represents the next step in a series of Turkish encroachments on the sovereignty of Syria,” the Syrian foreign ministry said.
In the meantime, spokesman for the Syrian Kurdish Self-Defense Forces, Rozhathat Rog, in an interview, said that Turkish bombing would not go without an answer.
According to him, the Turkish military and the units of the Free Syrian Army wanted to infiltrate Afrin from the territory of the Bilbile district, but the YPG forces did not allow them to do it.
Roger also said that Turkish warplanes bombed 100 points in the area of Afrin and fired the positions of the Kurdish self-defense forces. He specified that there are no casualties among YPG fighters, however, seven civilians were wounded, clashes and bombings in the conflict zone continue.
On the eve the General Staff of Turkey announced the beginning of the operation “Olive Branch” against the formation of Kurds in Syrian Afrin. According to military sources, the Turkish Air Force bombed the Minnig airfield in Syrian Afrin, through which the US supplied weapons to Kurdish armed groups. The council of the Kurdish canton reported that as a result of Turkish air strikes, 10 people were injured, including two children.
Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said that on Sunday the Turkish Armed Forces can join the operation in the Afrin area.
Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag, in his turn, said that the Turkish military will leave Syrian Afrin as soon as the military operation reaches its intended goals.
“This operation is not directed against our Turkmen, Kurdish and Arab brothers living there, but against terrorist organizations. It has begun with respect for the territorial integrity, sovereignty and political unity of Syria and will continue on the basis of these principles, “Bozdag said.
According to him, “after the operation has successfully achieved its goals, Turkey will leave therefrom.”
Meanwhile, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs handed over to the Consulate General of Syria in Istanbul a note on the operation “Olive Branch”, Tass reports citing Anadolu Ajansi.
