Russia began to form a permanent group in Syria

Russia has started forming a permanent group in Tartus and Hmeimim in Syria, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said.
“Last week, the commander-in-chief approved the structure and staff of the main bases in Tartus and Hmeimim,” the head of the Defense Ministry said at the conference call.
He thanked the parliament for ratifying the agreements.
Today, the Federation Council has considered a document that assumes the expansion of the logistics center of the Navy in Tartus to a full naval base.
The contract defines the procedure for entering the Russian military battleships in the Syrian ports, their registration and movement of military equipment. It is stipulated that simultaneously in Tartus there may be 11 ships, including nuclear ones.
Expenditures for expanding the base will amount to 3.2 billion rubles a year. The agreement is valid for 49 years with the possibility of its automatic extension for 25-year periods.
The protocol that regulates the deployment of the Russian aviation group in Syria was approved by the parliament in summer 2017.
On December 11, the president ordered the withdrawal of a large part of the contingent from Syria after the defeat of the terrorists. At the same time, it was stated that Russian bases in Hmeimim and Tartus would continue to function.
