Efforts by Russia, Iran and Turkey helped to curb violence in Syria and to drive the terrorists out of certain areas of the country, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.
“Actions by Russia, Iran and Turkey allowed to significantly scale down the violence in Syria and reduce the territories under the direct control of the Islamic State terrorist group,” Lavrov said.
The Russian foreign minister added that Moscow played an important part in reaching an international agreement on Tehran’s nuclear program, and expressed hope that the implementation of the comprehensive deal with Iran will strengthen the nuclear non-proliferation regime and contribute to stability in the Middle East and worldwide.
“Russian-Iranian cooperation today is an important factor in maintaining regional stability. Our key priority is the fight against the international terrorism, first of all in Syria. Thanks to joint steps by Moscow, Tehran and Ankara, a ceasefire was reached between the Syrian government forces and a number of armed opposition groups, and a mechanism to oversee this ceasefire was established,” Russia’s top diplomat said.
