Lavrov and Kerry discussed the need for a ceasefire in Ukraine

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and the U.S. State Secretary John Kerry on Tuesday held a telephone conversation at the initiative of the American side.

“When discussing the Ukrainian perspective, the Minister underlined the need for a ceasefire and the start of the conflicting sides heavy weapons withdrawal from the contact line in accordance with the Minsk agreement,” – is said in the document.

In this regard Lavrov informed Kerry about the content of the message of Russian President Vladimir Putin to the Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko on January 15.
